Living dairy free...and hating it.

So I have had to give up milk products, after realizing that they were upsetting Edward's stomach. All babies are gassy to some extent, but this kid was really gassy, and often at night you could actually hear his stomach making horrible noises while he screamed in pain. We were giving him the gripe water, but wanted to find the source of the problem rather than just constantly treat the symptoms. I tried a blander diet (absolutely no spicy foods, garlic, onions, beans, brocolli, etc.), but it didn't help that much, so, after some research, decided to try giving up dairy. Apparently some babies have extra sensitive stomachs that have a hard time breaking down the proteins in cow's milk. First I gave up just milk - I was drinking about 24oz a day (I love milk!) - and saw some definite improvement. So then I gave it all up - cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc., and voila - gas problems gone. No more churning stomach, no more arching back in pain - done. And then I started to mourn the loss of dairy in my life...

I never realized how much dairy I ate until I had to give it up. No more cereal in the morning, or cream of wheat, pancakes, or waffles, or french toast (ALL made with milk!!). It was either eggs or toast - boooooring. Also, no more yogurt for my daily healthy 3pm snack, no more grilled cheese, no more quesadillas, or lasagna, ice cream, hot chocolate, pudding, cheesecake (not that I eat these last couple of things everyday, but STILL). No more cheese on my egg sandwich or tacos, or deli meat sandwich, no more tall glass of cold milk with dinner (insert sobs here..), etc.

What the heck am I supposed to eat?!! Not to mention where am I going to get my calcium?!

Well, I've started taking a calcium supplement (lame, but better than nothing), and have researched which fruits, vegetables and legumes are good sources of calcium.

And, I've started drinking this:
I have always found soymilk to be mildly repulsive, especially its freaky unnatural color. But, after WEEKS with no milk, I finally caved after my mom sent a carton to my house. It was just too tempting - the thought of being able to have cereal again in the morning...

...and believe it or not, I have grown to like it! Weird. But desperate times call for desperate measures, and if you go long enough without something, a close substitute starts to sound pretty dang good. The cereal covers up most of the taste, and I've even gotten to the point where I can drink it straight...in small amounts...and out of the container, so I don't have to see the weird brownish-grey cast that it has.

Anyhow, it's expensive, and way higher fat than my old skim milk, but it's a great source of protein, has calcium in it, and now, after a I have a couple of cookies or a PBJ, I can wash them down with some nice creamy milk.

And all in all, it's a small price to pay for Eddie to not be uncomfortable all the time. :)

Next adventure: vegan ice cream...

I went cold-turkey on dairy when Clara was first diagnosed with her milk allergies, and I grew to really enjoy soy stuff--especially soy milk. I wasn't sad when I went back to dairy, but I didn't mind it at all. Plus, I am still convinced--and I mean absolutely convinced--that dairy-free diets are the best way to shed baby weight. So there you go. There's a bright side! (P.S. I never did eat any vegan cheese. Seemed one step too weird for me. But I did love soy yogurt!)

Ugh - I had to do this with Walker too. Dairy and whole grains. I could eat yogurt though. Something about how it is more broken down than straight milk. That first big glass of cold milk (with a cookie, of course) after a year was heavenly.

I'm sooooo glad you figured out his problem!! That is so hard when they are miserable and you can't figure it out. I didn't mind soy milk when I was drinking it with Sterling. In fact, with WIC I think I could get lactose free milk. Maybe I'm remembering wrong... I know I drank Lactaid. It is nasty. Soy is way better. It was a hard year, but so very worth a happy baby. And I could sneak little bits of dairy here and there, but milk, yogurt and icecream were always major no-nos.

So glad you're both in a happier place. Love you tons!

Btw, do Sunday phone calls ever work for you? I know you have two sets of parents to visit and when you add naptimes in it makes Sundays pretty busy. Just wondering.

I've been drinking soy milk for years now and I've barely become accustomed to drinking it solo. Vegan icecream... I tried Tofutti and it was ok. I really did not like soy yogurt. Sorry little man is not dealing well with the dairy. Hope this changes soon (for you and him).

I'm glad you figured out the problem. I think it would be very hard to give up dairy but I know you can do it! Good luck!

Just a little side note, Soy Chocolate milk is fantastic! :) Glad you figured out the problem though! :)

So now you can understand where Lou is coming from, and what I went through all those years :)
Except that he can have milk if he takes that pill.
Anyway, it'll go by fast enough. And I tried to go one day without having milk, and realized that it is in SO many things-ug!

I have read some interesting article about the dangers of drinking soymilk for women. It is very controversial.
Some say excessive use of soy leads to breast cancer and other cancers. Isoflavones from soymilk are held responsible for thyroid disorder, leukemia and breast cancer. In women, soymilk can produce abnormalities in the reproductive tract, which can lead to infertility. Estrogen in soymilk is harmful for babies. Soy is hidden in lots of our everyday food. You may want to look into. I have read that almond milk is a better alternative (it still has a lot of sugar but you can buy it unsweetened.) You can do a little research and come to your own conclusions. Thought I would just let you know. I don't know what to believe. I'm glad I can drink cow’s milk when I'm nursing. It seems like everything has a positive and negative. You just have to do whats best for you. It may be fine in moderation.

I don't what I would do if I had to give up milk... I LOVE it. Kudos to you though, you wonder mom, you! I am so glad that Edward is doing so well without that cows milk...

I feel for you. I am on a completely allergy free diet, every time I nurse. No nuts, no dairy, no eggs. You will learn all sorts of new things and new treats! Try palm oil shortening as a sub for butter and bake away! Rice milk is much better than Soy on cereal...AND soy ice cream is really yummy.
